Out on shoot

Ian Carlson is renowned for capturing spectacular colours in his stunning images and has become one of Australia's most exciting contemporary landscape photographers. His work has been described as ‘inspiring and unique’, capturing the mood and sheer brilliance the landscape has to offer.

Born in Sydney, Australia, Ian has always had an adventurous spirit, frequently embarking on expeditions to explore the wilderness of the vast island continent he calls home. A deep affection for nature and the ocean manifested throughout his childhood, he realised there was a large part of the planet that was virtually unexplored and teaming with life. Ian was drawn to the oceans in his early years inspired by the likes of Jacque Cousteau’s television specials, the spectacular imagery of the BBC wildlife documentaries and the dulcet tones of David Atenbourgh.

Ian says his passion for nature was further enhanced during his studies at the University of Sydney where he completed a Bachelors degree in Marine Biology and a Graduate Diploma in Biological Sciences. As a qualified marine ecologist, he has worked on marine projects around much of Australia, which has provided ample opportunity to travel extensively, photographing and exploring the spectacular and diverse Australian coastline.

"The oceans provide me with a place of refuge, peace and perspective. Water continually changes and influences the rugged Australian landscape, as it does my life." says Ian.

In 2003, Ian made Adelaide, South Australia his home. Being a marine ecologist and a landscape photographer Ian spends much of his time traveling the southern coastline all year round as well as making multiple expeditions each year to various parts of Australia and the rest of the world.

His photography is driven by a need to explore, and he often draws inspiration from the landscape he discovers through his travels. Ians work has been published in books he has also written a number of illustrated articles which have been published in photography magazines.

“I am inspired, by chasing the light and capturing the essence of the scene and time that may never be replicated on film again."
