Framing

If you are ordering in Australia, we suggested that you get your Ian Carlson Limited Edition Print framed by our experienced framers. By using our framing service you avoid the potential risk of damaging your new purchase by way of accidental finger prints, rolling and unrolling abrasions, inexperienced framers or other unforseen incidences.

Time is the greatest enemy of a poorly framed piece. In order to minimise deterioration and fading over the lifetime of your artwork, our framers use only the highest quality archival materials, including 100% cotton rags - completely acid and lignin-free. Our framers also employ specially designed archival film to reduce undesirable "orange peel" effects. This technique provides a barrier between the substrate and the print to further protect your art from the harmful effects of the environment, much extending its longevity.

A range of suggested framing and matting options to match your new purchase and décor is available. Please contact us here at australiangallery.com for further details.

ORGANISING YOUR OWN FRAMING & HANDLING

See our framing instructions below

Your Ian Carlson Limited Edition Print is produced on Fujiflex Crystal Archive paper - a photographic material with excellent archival qualities. This material has a very delicate surface and must be handled carefully to avoid fingerprints and other marks on the face of the print. When handling use cotton gloves and avoid dusty, humid and hot conditions. Handle the print only by the black area at the outermost edges and take care not to dent of crease the paper in any way. Having checked your new print, if you are not framing it immediately, return it to the cylinder and store in a cool dry place. Frequent handling increases the risk of damage to your beautiful Limited Edition Print.

Make sure your framer is experienced in framing photographs, as Fujiflex Crystal Archive paper is extremely difficult to frame correctly. Many framers do not have the right equipment to mount and frame your artwork, so seek out a good commercial framer who has the necessary equipment and expertise to correctly mount and frame Fujiflex Crystal Archive prints.

On delivering the print to your chosen framer, be sure to open it with them to check that it is in good condition before they take possession of it, and also to discuss how it will be framed for you. Make sure the framers are able to mount as per these instructions.

As Fujiflex Crystal Archive paper material is very inert, the print must be securely mounted on board to ensure it does not lift under the glass. Our framer uses archival film made by Sallmetal (Artmount P). This double sided adhesive film, when mounted down through rollers as the right pressure, gives and excellent result. The backboard should be as smooth as possible (We use craftwood or customwood).

To be presented to its best advantage, the print should be framed leaving approximately 10 mm of gloss black at the top and sides and at least 20 mm at the bottom of the print where the signature and title appear. A mat should be used to lift the glass slightly off the surface of the print.

We do not recommend hinged mounting as the result will be a rippled surface that is visually unattractive and can also allow the print to lift up and touch the glass which will result in damage to the face of the print. We suggest the print be glued to craft board, masonite board, balsa board or treated flat aluminium sheet. The print should then be cold vacuum pressed to obtain the absolute flattest finish possible.

TIPS

- A dry lint free soft cotton cloth is your best hope when trying to remove finger prints although this will not always work.

- Don't get the print wet with any solution. NB. Framers, avoid using compressed air guns to dust of the print. The humid air in the compressor can blemish the glossy surface of the print.
